We are overjoyed to bring you our full line-up for PZYK 2017, a noisy, electric gathering of some of the finest minds from across the psychedelic spectrum. Joining headliners THE BLACK ANGELS and SONGHOY BLUES are a host of names from the past and present, all of whom contribute to making this year’s festival a pan-continental voyage of discovery.
John Dwyer’s Castle Face Records – one of the hottest imprints in the world right now – present IRREGULAR ORBITS, the label’s first ever curated festival stage. Feature some of the finest groups on their roster – ONCE & FUTURE BAND, SUNWATCHERS, MALE GAZE, MAGNETIX + DUDS – Irregular Orbits will give us an insight into what the label has in store heading into the fall. Castle Face DJs and a host of Castle Face frolics across the festival will programme to be announced over the coming months.
Iconic 70s Swedish psych trailblazers TRÄD, GRÄS OCH STENAR – the forbearers to Goat, Dungen et al. – make a rare UK appearance. The group were pioneers of DIY culture: they jammed with force and purpose for 40 minutes back when ‘legendary’ SF groups or German kraut rock bands were still struggling to get out of the upper single digits with dignity; they traveled with organic food they grew themselves and cooked for everyone they played to; they made their own instruments, amplifiers and PAs; they played an integral role in establishing the buoyant Swedish underground and DIY culture which flourishes today. Without Träd, Gräs Och Stenar there is no Goat, there is no Dungen.
Lost 70s Zambian psych troupe W.I.T.C.H: WE INTEND TO CAUSE HAVOC also drop in at the festival, playing live with a new band that features Jacco Gardner. W.I.T.C.H. were the most popular Zambian rock band of the 1970s spearheading a new genre dubbed Zamrock. Largely unknown outside their home country, they finally received the exposure they deserve when Now Again Records reissued their catalogue in 2012. A feature length documentary, We Intend To Cause Havoc, explores the life and times of W.I.T.C.H’s lead singer Emmanuel “Jagari” Chanda and will be partly filmed at Liverpool Psych Fest.
Elsewhere on the bill, we’re delighted to welcome THE BUG vs DYLAN CARLSON, JANE WEAVER, THE TELESCOPES, IL SOGNO DEL MARINAIO, GNOD, THE HOLYDRUG COUPLE, FUJIYA & MIYAGI, COSMONAUTS, PATTEN, KRAUTWERK and ENDLESS BOOGIE – along with a raft of further names – to join us on this year’s ultrasonic happening. ANDY VOTEL, STEVE DAVIS & KAVUS TORABI head up this year’s DJ offering, along with THE BROTHERS GRIM – with more to be announced on the DJ programme in the coming months.
